Cotswold District Council reports upward trend in food and garden waste recycling

Residents in the Cotswolds are recycling more food and garden waste this year compared with the same time last year. 

Figures show that during the first quarter of 2016/17 about 4,518 tonnes of organic material was collected whereas the total for the same quarter in 2015/16 was 4,161 tonnes.

Cllr Sue Coakley, Cotswold District Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, is delighted to see this upward trend:

"I am very grateful to local residents for recycling more food and garden waste and helping us reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill. 

"We participated in a county-wide campaign almost a year ago which encouraged residents to make better use of our weekly kerbside food waste recycling service, and this led to a marked increase in the demand for caddies.  These improved recycling rates are another indicator showing that people took notice of the campaign, which reminded everyone about the value of recycling items such as mealtime leftovers, food past its 'sell-by' date, tea bags, bones and egg shells."
